Flu Jab (Fluarix Tetra)

FLUARIX TETRA is indicated for active immunisation of adults and children from 6 months of age for the prevention of influenza disease caused by the two influenza A virus subtypes and the two influenza B virus types contained in the vaccine.

Important to note: The flu vaccine may contain egg protein and is not suitable for individuals who are allergic to it.

How do I know which vaccines I need?

Our vaccination guide is available in our article base.

Prior to vaccination, our doctor in attendance will ask necessary questions, advise on dosage, frequency and side effects as well as explain benefits and coverage of the vaccine. You are encouraged to surface your questions to the doctor at time of consultation.

In the event that the vaccination which you have selected is inappropriate or unnecessary, a full refund will be made following the consult. Our vaccination guide is available in our article base.

Can I take multiple vaccines on the same day?

Selected vaccines can be taken on the same day depending on the nature of the vaccines. We will however be judicious in offering this as side effects such as fever.

What if i fail to complete the full course?

A typical primary course may include a series of 2 or 3 vaccinations.

In the event that the 2nd or 3rd dose is missed, our doctors will evaluate and advise on the appropriate action. If it is within guidelines to continue, we will do so. We will likewise advise if the period of protection is inadequate and if a fresh series is mandated.

Can I take vaccinations if I am unwell?

You should not take vaccinations if you are feeling unwell. Side effects of vaccines typically include fever, rashes, myalgia and/or malaise. As such, the side effects may worsen the symptoms that you may already feel as a result of your current ailment.

What if I have to leave the country before completing the jabs?

In the event that you have to leave the country, we will provide a summary of the vaccinations taken till date.

Most of the vaccines that we offer are available on a global footprint. It is thus possible that you can continue the vaccination series to completion in your next country of travel. So long as you are able to furnish appropriate and clear documentation of your past vaccinations.

In like manner, if you have come from another country and require follow up of your vaccination series, our doctors will be able to assist you so long as appropriate and clear documentation is available.

What if I am pregnant? Can I take the vaccination?

When you are pregnant, certain vaccinations odd not be administered. As this varies on a case to case basis, it is best to consult our doctor in attendance at our clinic, prior to making a booking for your vaccination.

What are the common side effects of vaccinations?

The most common side effects after vaccination are mild. They include:

  • Pain, swelling, or redness where the shot was given.
  • Mild fever
  • Chills
  • Feeling tired
  • Headache
  • Muscle and joint aches

Most common side effects are a sign that your body is starting to build immunity (protection) against a disease.

Is Flu Vaccination necessary?

Flu vaccination is to protect you against Influenza.  People who should get the flu vaccine include:

  • Healthcare workers with patient contact
  • Laboratory workers exposed to the virus
  • Those with underlying chronic illness of the lungs or heart, like asthma
  • Those with diabetes, kidney or blood disorders or lowered immunity
  • Pregnant women at all stages of pregnancy
  • Children aged 12 to 59 months
  • Elderly

Who should take the Varicella vaccination?

It is recommended that everyone 12 months and older, who have not been previously vaccinated or lack evidence of past infection or immunity.

What should I take note of for Hepatitis B vaccination?

Present your Hepatitis B immunisation record, that is not more than 3 months ago, on the vaccination day.

Do I need to fast prior to my vaccination?

No, there is no fasting required prior to vaccination.

What should I bring for the vaccination?
  • Identification card for verification purpose 
  • Appointment confirmation email 
  • CHAS, Pioneer Generation or Merdeka Generation cards if applicable

What is the difference between the Northern and Southern hemisphere influenza strain?

The northern and southern strains follow the cold seasons of the northern hemisphere (NH) and southern hemisphere (SH) respectively. The composition of the seasonal flu vaccine is determined by information released by the WHO (World Health Organisation) detailing the influenza strains that are predicted to be active and prominent during the months of May to October (SH) and October to April (NH). Flu vaccination is recommended once a year, but a repeat vaccination may be recommended if the strains vary significantly between the hemispheres.

I took a flu vaccination 6 months ago, should I take the new strain again?

This depends upon the recommendations of the WHO and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the health profile of the individual. You should consult your doctor for advice before deciding on the flu vaccination.

I am travelling soon. When should I have my flu vaccination?

The immunity from flu vaccination takes about 2 weeks to develop, it is advisable to get vaccinated at least 2 weeks prior to departure.

How effective is the flu vaccination in the current covid-19 virus pandemic?

The flu vaccination does not protect against the Covid-19 coronavirus. However, it is still recommended especially because the symptoms of both the Covid-19 and flu symptoms are similar, and it will be challenging to distinguish the two.

Influenza is less serious than Covid-19. Why should I get the flu vaccination?

Even healthy people can get the flu, and those with underlying illnesses like diabetes and respiratory diseases are vulnerable to complications. As many as 650,000 people worldwide die from the flu and its complications annually.

What are the common side effects of the flu vaccination?

Mild side effects like slight pain, redness, swelling at the site of the injection, as well as muscle aches and slight fever are common. Severe side effects like the Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which causes muscle weakness and paralysis, are extremely rare (approx 1 in 1,000,000 people).

I am feeling unwell, can I still do my vaccination?

It is not advisable for you to do your vaccination if you are having fever. Otherwise, we are more than happy to welcome you. Get a good rest and you can visit us again when you are well.

Can I use Medisave for my vaccinations?

Medisave can be used to offset the cost of vaccination in persons at risk of developing flu related complications. Under the Medisave500 scheme, Singaporeans can utilise up to $500 of their Medisave annually for certain recommended vaccinations (subject to terms and conditions). You can use your Medisave to pay for yourself, or your immediate family members (spouse, children and parents).

Can I use Medisave for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine?

Yes, females aged 9 to 26 years old may use their own Medisave or that of their immediate family members to pay for the vaccination under the Medisave500 Scheme.

Is CHAS subsidy available for vaccinations?

All Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) who meet the criteria for vaccination under the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS) and National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS) are eligible for subsidies for nationally-recommeded vaccinations. 

From 1 November 2020, Singaporeans will enjoy subsidies from $35 to $125 for nationally-recommended vaccinations listed on the Subsidised Vaccine List (SVL) administered at CHAS GP clinics. After government subsidies, eligible Singaporeans need only pay the following amounts for the range of nationally recommended vaccinations at CHAS GP clinics:

  • Eligible Singaporean children: $0 
  • Eligible Pioneer Generation cardholders: capped at $9 to $16 per vaccination dose
  • Eligible Merdeka Generation, CHAS Blue and Orange cardholders: capped at $18 to $31 per vaccination dose
  • Other eligible adult Singaporeans: capped at $35 to $63 per vaccination dose

Yes, you may use your Medisave for the remaining co-payment amount of the recommended vaccinations under the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS) and National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS). For patients aged 60 and above, you may also tap on FlexiMediSave.
